Baptism
"Baptism incorporates us into Christ and forms us into God's people. This first Sacrament ... washes away every stain of sin, Original and personal, and makes us sharers in God's own life and his adopted children ... By signing us with the gift of the Spirit, Confirmation makes us more completely the image of the Lord and fills us with the Holy Spirit, so that we may bear witness to Him before all the world... Finally, coming to the table of the Eucharist, we eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of Man, so that we may have eternal life and show forth the unity of God's people..." (Rite of Christian Initiation, Gen. Intro., nos. 2 & 5).
Baptism is the first sacrament of Christian initiation. It publicly identifies us as a follower of Christ and is a public testament to follow in His ways. For parents considering baptism for their children, a brief baptism preparation meeting is required. Parents of a child to be baptized should be practicing Catholics and members of the parish. Meetings are held once a month and include topics such as the role of baptism, choosing godparents, etc.
The Sacrament of Baptism is scheduled by appointment. Please call the rectory at (412) 766-6660 to register for the next baptism preparation meeting or schedule a Baptism. .
Baptism is not reserved only for infants and children, but is offered to people of all ages. While children are usually baptized at the request of their parents, older children and adults may receive the sacrament through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA).
More information about RCIA is available by contacting Mary Ellen Stalczynski at (412) 766-6660 x333, via email at mstalczynski@assumptionchurch.org, or by clicking here.
