Anointing, in Biblical and other ancient symbolism, is rich in meaning: oil is a sign of abundance and joy; it cleanses (anointing before and after a bath) and limbers (the anointing of athletes and wrestlers); oil is a sign of healing, since it is soothing to bruises and wounds; and it makes radiant with beauty, health, and strength.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1293)
Children, who have been baptized, normally receive the Sacrament of Confirmation when they are in eighth grade. Their preparation takes place through the Religious Education program, either at Assumption School or in Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (C.C.D.) classes. For more information about Religious Education and C.C.D., please call 412-766-4046, email mliotta@assumptionchurch.org, or click here. Adults who desire to receive or to learn more about the Sacrament of Confirmation can take part in a special period of preparation called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, or R.C.I.A.
